Growing in Story: making sense of the life I have lived

You have hung a dozen doors in other people's houses and never drawn the plan of your own. You have built and given all your life, and it shows in other people's houses.

You will recognize this

The morning starts with the to-do list. The phone rings, and you are glad, because someone needs something. On quiet afternoons, when nothing needs fixing, you feel strangely restless. It is not rest you mind. It is not being for something.

Need a truck? You are already on the way. When a neighbor's fence goes down, when the church or synagogue needs a ramp, when a grandchild needs a ride to practice, you are there before the call ends. What you have passed on is not a monument. It is specific people.

This season

There was always the next job: a house, a family, a business, a parish, a team. Now the jobs come less often, and a builder can feel lost. For the first time you can stand back far enough to see the whole street. The work is done. What it meant is still waiting to be said.
